Sonam Wangchuk will end hunger strike if political leaders assure Parliament discussion on education reforms, says wife

Sonam Wangchuk will end his hunger strike tomorrow if political leaders meet him at Safdarjung Hospital and assure him that they will raise the issue of education accountability and reforms during the Monsoon Session of Parliament, his wife Gitanjali Angmo said on Sunday.

“Sonam will end his hunger strike tomorrow if political leaders meet him at Safdarjung Hospital and assure him that they will raise the issue of education accountability in this Parliament session and the main issue of this session will be education accountability and reforms…” said Angmo.

However, Angmo added that the activist will continue his hunger strike if the accountability is not secured through Parliament.

“If that accountability is not secured through Parliament, he will continue his fast. Even after staying for two days in the hospital, he did not break his hunger strike…,” she said.

Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike for the last 22 days in support of the Cockroach Janta Party’s protest against paper leaks and student suicides.

The CJP’s key demand is Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation over the paper leaks.

The CJP has also called for a protest march to Parliament on Monday to press for its demands.

However, the Delhi Police has clarified that no permission has been sought or granted for the proposed march to Parliament.

The police have also imposed Section 163 of the BNSS, prohibiting the assembly of five or more people in Delhi.
